Woodbridge Municipal Offenses

Anyone charged with a crime in Woodbridge needs the help of an experienced criminal defense lawyer. The Woodbridge Municipal Court handles crimes that can result in substantial jail time and expensive fines. Convictions can mean a criminal record that can last a lifetime, damage to a person’s reputation, and often, serious civil consequences as well, such as difficulty in getting employment.

The law firm of Aiello, Harris, Abate Law Group PC represents clients in the Woodbridge Municipal Court who have been charged with the following crimes.

Theft

Theft charges include stealing cash, credit card theft, identity theft, and shoplifting. Theft of items valued under $200 is a municipal offense. Theft of $200 or more, or theft that includes robbery, grand theft, or crimes involving physical force, is usually an indictable offense.  The amount of prison time and the fines depend on the value of the items taken and any additional factors, such as the use of force. The defendant will usually be ordered to return the items or pay the value if convicted.

An experienced New Jersey criminal defense lawyer will explore defenses such as whether there was intent to steal, the actual value of the items taken, and questions about where and how the theft occurred.

Resisting Arrest

Resisting arrest can be classified as a disorderly person crime or an indictable offense, depending on several factors, including whether flight was involved, a vehicle was used, or if the person being arrested used force. We aim to dismiss the charge or show that the offense should be handled in a municipal court. We may assert defenses such as a mistake in communication rather than actual resistance.

Other Woodbridge municipal court offenses

Woodbridge is a known speed trap, and this municipal court hears thousands of speeding ticket cases yearly. An attorney can help you beat some more serious traffic violations, such as reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and more.

    • Criminal Mischief

    • Disorderly Conduct

    • Driving under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance

    • Harassment

    • Trespassing

Every defendant has the right to assert a defense and to confront, in court, any witnesses against them. Experienced criminal defense lawyers leave no stone unturned. Possible defenses may include:

    • Showing that the police did not follow Constitutional or New Jersey rules

    • The facts do not merit the charge

    • There are alternative explanations

    • The evidence is not reliable

    • The evidence was obtained illegally

Woodbridge Municipal Court Attorneys

Several lawyers at the law firm of Aiello, Harris, Abate Law Group, PC, have prior experience as prosecutors in municipal courts. This initial work experience greatly helps defense lawyers, as they gain a deeper understanding of prosecutors’ arguments and mindsets. The more a criminal defense lawyer can anticipate the prosecution’s statements, the better they can prepare defenses and formulate compelling counterarguments. As former prosecutors, our lawyers have a better feel than other lawyers for when prosecutors might be willing to enter into a plea agreement.

The sooner you speak with a  New Jersey criminal defense lawyer, the sooner you can focus on achieving a just result rather than fearing the consequences. Aiello, Harris, Abate Law Group, PC, utilizes experience, tenacity, and persuasive arguments to help clients secure justice in New Jersey. We have helped many clients get charges dropped or reduced.
